Plant products in northern Catalonia according to historical and archaeobotanic sources (19th centuries): productions and exchanges

Abstract

Food Plants in northern catalonia according to historical and Archaeo-botanical Sources (10th-15th centuries) : Production and Exchange. Located at a crossroad of cultural influences between the Mediterranean worlds of Spain and the South of France, northern Catalonia (Pyrénées-Orientales, France) that is studied here is an exceptional observation point for understanding the circulation of goods, the transmission of agricultural techniques and their integration in Medieval societies. The confrontation of carpological data gleaned from recent syntheses with textual sources, in particular toll rates, reveals the existence of important networks for the commerce of foodstuffs from Arab Spain to northern Catalonia. In the light of these different sources, we will discuss the food plants consumed in this region between the 10th and the 15th centuries as well as the local or commercial origins of some of them (grains, figs, grapes).
