Russia of enchanters, or the art of deceiving its world

Abstract

The enchanters, the story of a family of Venetian charlatans at the Catherine II court inspired by Casanova’s memories, can be perceived as passing on Gary’s Russian cultural heritage and as a self-fiction consolidating the construction of its Russian identity. However, a careful reading of the Russian lexical elements in the text, the onomastic, the references to literature and folklore, and the representation of history and geographical and temporal space reveals a duplication in this project. Russian-speaking readers perceive the large proportion of provocation in the representation of the Russian world, which suggests that Gary’s Russian homeland is only in Russian language and literature. By its comic and profitorious character, the text fits into the tradition of heteronymous Russian authors, such as Kozma Proutkov and Abram Tertz, and announces the creation of Emile Ajar. Diver Ruth Louise. Russia as enchanters, or the art of deceiving its world. In: Literatures 56,2007. Roman Gary, the shadow of the histoire. pp. 129-140.
