Sadism, macabre erotism and oppression

Abstract

The latest film by González Iñarritu, Biutiful (2010) provides an opportunity to look back at Luis Buñuel’s Mexican cinema, in particular his film Los olvidados (1950), and to establish an intertextual dialogue on key elements of the design of macabre ertism. sadism, the fall of heroes, the locus of sacrifice (Mexico City, Barcelona) in the aesthetic of an imperfect cinema (García Espinosa) and committed (Tercer Cine Latinoamericano) to combating inequality. All these aspects are linked to social reality and the denunciation of poverty in both films. Both make reference to the literature on oppression in Latin America (Paolo Freire, Octavio Paz, Roberto Fernández retamar, etc.) and to the French news on sadism (Marquis de Sade, Georges Bataille) in the context of contemporary post-colonial thinking (Edward Said, García Canclini, Homi K. Bhabha and others).
