Transfers of pottery techniques

Abstract

The ancient workshops of Bavay, Pont-sur-Sambre and Famars form a group whose productions are difficult to distinguish because jugs and mortars fired in the A type are all thrown from calcareous clays. It is necessary to differentiate the three centres to cross typological and chronological data with an approach integrating macroscopic, petrographic and chemical analyzes. The latter highlight the similarity of the productions and deliver additional information. They prove the movement of potters from one pharmacy to another, as well as the transfer of their techniques passed down from generation to generation. The samples, by kiln and by type, show that the production based on calcareous clays changes little over time. The blends are adapted and vary only slightly for three centuries, reflecting a characteristic signature of a group of potters.
