Abstract
This article looks at the writer Ferenc Herczeg (1863-1954), one of the first representatives of Hungarian midllebrow culture, who fell into almost complete oversight, partly because he was in the vast grey area separating elite and mass culture in the first half of the 20th century. After giving a brief overview of his career, we will analyse the themes and typical processes of his work and present the material which has disseminated it (books, series, press) and, in the final stage, we will analyse its transmedia dimension through the cinematographic adaptations which that author has brought about in order to shed light on the trend of cultural logic towards the ‘medium’ and the political, economic and cultural factors contributing to the formation of an average Hungarian audience.
