Abstract
Contemporary French research on journalism follows two main trends : institutionalisation according to the model of “journalism studies” in the United States, and a routine use of content analysis. These techniques are not well suited to the needs of sociologists, given that they are increasingly removed from the discipline’s primary methods of investigation. In this context, this article advocates for the empirical data produced on journalism to be re-situated within a sociology of the production of symbolic goods, and beyond that within general sociological theory. More specifically, the authors propose a research program that is structured around the mapping of the journalistic field and the analysis of its relations with other components of the field of power.
