By reviving a subject neglected since the two studies of Georges Cirot (BHi 8-2, 1906; 24-3, 1922), this article aims at shedding some light on the fate of the Spanish language among the Spanish-Portuguese Jews in the Southwest of France. From a language of culture it became a language of liturgy; its echoes have, from now, become a central and unique referent in the religious identity of the French Sephardim.

Ravivant un sujet oublié depuis les deux études de Georges Cirot (BHi 8-2, 1906 ; 24-3, 1922), cet article se propose d’éclairer le destin de l’espagnol chez les Juifs hispano-portugais du Sud-Ouest de la France. De langue de culture, il est devenu langue rituelle ; ses échos sont désormais un référent central et unique de l’identité religieuse des Séphardim de France.

Reviviendo una cuestión abandonada desde los dos estudios de Georges Cirot (BHi 8-2, 1906; 24-3, 1922), este artículo se propone verter una cierta luz sobre el destino de la lengua española entre los Judios españoles y portugueses del suroeste de Francia. De lengua de cultura ha pasado a ser lengua de liturgia; sus ecos se han convertido en un referente central y único de la identidad religiosa de los sefardíes de Francia.
