This paper examines the environmental history of the 250-acre Vimy Ridge Memorial in Northern France. It argues that the meaning of Vimy Ridge and the memorial within Canadian culture has been shaped by the physical environment of the site. In particular, the geographic location of Vimy Ridge in Europe, as well as the biological and physical features of the memorial park, shaped the possible meanings assigned to the site.
