Resist in a holding

Abstract

This article examines changes in labour organization in farming businesses, viewed through the prism of resistance to management supervision. It shows that such resistance may be individual or collective, “for oneself” or “for others”, seek to slow production or on the contrary accelerate it, but in all cases responds to a wish to loosen control and reclaim work. It may also result from the more recent form of control exerted by mass retailing over farming, resulting in increased standardization and additional certification systems for products and processes. Farming businesses are obliged to adopt these to access customers and perpetuate business relations. Irrespective of whether these specifications are identical for all or specific to each client, they have implications for the daily practices of these agricultural businesses’ seasonal and permanent employees.
