Abstract
This article examines the contents of six maps found on the Internet, which illustrate the spatial distribution of the different religious groups present in the Lebanon. The extension of the Christians and the Muslims, followed by that of the Shiites, the Sunnis, the Maronites and the Druzes are presented in a series of simplified maps. The alleged maximal extension of each community, their “cores” as well as the shared spaces are analyzed. The article then questions the very possibility of mapping religions in view of the many underlying semantic and conceptual confusions and hidden geopolitical agendas.
