Abstract
The migration of women in frontier zones has been rarely studied. It is considered wrongly that women are not numerous to join migration rushes. Nevertheless, the Ilakaka area in Madagascar shows that they can be almost as numerous as men in migrating to small scale mining frontiers in the country. Most of the time, these migrations are a positive choice. For Malagasy women who experience many gender inequalities, especially in some parts of the country, frontier zones represent a good opportunity for emancipation. Women migrate to become richer, but they also look for a new life in a society where gender inequalities are smaller than in the other parts of the country.
