PowerPoint has become an unavoidable tool in oral science communication. It is paradoxically frequently not mastered or used adequately, and therefore harshly criticized. This paper is a review of its origins, its affordances, of its effective use and of the foundations for criticism. It is concluded that PowerPoint is a “rhetoric machine” modifying communicational genres by boosting the use of images.
