Moral unacceptability of literary narratives

Abstract

Stemming from moral controversies in literature, this article deals with the reception of contemporary works. The literary discourse triggers judgments that sometimes turn into polemic. Hence, metadiscourses with moral content are produced, and they classify these productions into good and bad works. In the fictional field, these normative reactions take quite an interesting stance regarding freedom of speech and the criminalization of said discourse. First, the unconventional nature of this literary discourse is discussed through the controversies related to its non-compliance with privacy. It broadly questions the relationship between fiction, truth and falsehood. Next, this article tackles the often stormy relationship between literature, history and historical truth. Finally, the treatment of particularly sensitive issues such as religion, gender and childhood is explored to account for the moral acceptability of contemporary literary discourse. This complex and plastic overview questions the very possibility of creative writing.
