The press of the High Sorbians: historical sketch

Abstract

Upper Sorbian newspapers have a long tradition. Students published in 1766 the first handwritten sorbian newsbook. The founder of the Sorbian political journalism was Jan Dejka, who published the Sserbski powědar a kurier in 1809. From 1842 on, Tydźenska Nowina played a major role in the Sorbian society. It was given a new name in 1854: Serbske Nowiny. Some supplementary sections, such as the literary journal Łužica or the magazine for children Raj, became regular periodicals. The Sorbian Protestants published Pomhaj Bóh in 1891 and the Catholics Katolski Posoł in 1863. The nazi regime put an end to a flourishing Sorbian press in1937. In 1945 the Liberation meant for the Sorbs a national revival. In 1947 Nowa Doba opened supplementary sections for children, youngsters and teachers. In 1990 the daily took back its first name Serbske Nowiny and resumed the progressive tradition, that its previous redactors had initiated at the time of the Enlightenment and the Weimar Republic.
