Public memories of Risorgimento in liberal Italy. A historical pathway

Abstract

This articles gives a sample of recent works that have engaged in a tight dialogue with European historiography, in order to study the construction of the Risorgimento’s public memory and the different paths to political and cultural Italian nationalization. This article insists on recent works dedicated to the five first decades after the Unification of the Kingdom, i. e. 1861-1911. It has been a crucial period for founding the myths of the Risorgimento and making them become part of the political discourse, in order to be used in the various strategies of patriotic pedagogy. The dialectical relationships between official and alternative memories, the many symbolic devices used for the transmission of images, discourses and rituals, the various agents (national or local institutions, associations etc) implementing the staging and wording of the Risorgimento, the different levels of reception by the Italians are the themes that the Author stresses in this article.
