This article examines the role of linguistics in the acquisition of reading and writing. Firstly, the author describes a collaboration over the last thirty years between researchers in the areas of linguistics and psycholinguistics as related to writing. He then analyses the effect of the orthography variable on this collaboration. An essential role in this design is that of phonography, although the hegemony of this is further investigated by the increasing influence of graphic polyvalence.
