Abstract
Compiled by Sima Guang, who was assisted by four other historians, the Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government (Zizhi tongjian 資治通鑑) is the most influential history in China apart from the official histories. In the form of chronicle annals, this work of 294 juan (“scrolls”) recounts the history of 16 dynasties and covers 1362 years, from 403 BC to 959 AD. It aims to provide models and lessons to help government. Due to the quantity and varied nature of its sources as well as its use of unique historical methods, this work met with acclaim upon publication. Engagement with the work continued as numerous commentaries, abridged versions as well as different and follow-up versions were published throughout the course of history. All these aspects of the work had a great influence on how Chinese history was understood, not only for the Chinese, but also for foreigners.
