The debt crisis, demographic ageing and structural changes in the labour market pose challenges for the social state. These phenomena reinforce the chauvinism of some right-wing parties in many European countries as regards welfare states. However, the answers proposed by these parties are only apparent solutions. Switzerland needs to react more intelligently.
