Abstract
We look in order to see, but also to think, touch, feel, experience and desire. In puberty, the gaze is filled with emotions that can overwhelm the adolescent. He does not control the effect that his image has on the person who is looking at him. His body, which is changing, is alienated by the gaze of the other; he doubts his image and his narcissism is sorely tested. It is a period of narcissistic reorganisation, which is an issue of major importance in adolescence for underpinning a psychic and bodily unity that is threatened and disturbed. If he feels threatened by the gaze of the other which undermines his narcissistic integrity, the adolescent may react violently. Adolescent revolt is often an attempt at restoring a flayed narcissism. The adolescent must make a choice between remaining in the omnipotent narcissistic ideal and finding his way towards subjectivation. Meeting a psychoanalyst can be an opportunity for him to direct his gaze towards his inner world and to become the author of his own history.
