Abstract
Summary In the last decade, Loreto has distinguished itself as a destination with a strong focus on nature tourism: this situation, together with the advantage of being called the Mágico People, offers it the opportunity to kick-start a more inclusive and sustainable tourism development model, with a great difference from the traditional model of mass and sun and beach applied in Los Cabos, which has led to an exclusive and insufficiently integrated development from an economic, sectoral, social and territorial perspective. The research corresponds to an exploratory study, considering two analysis periods: 2000 and 2015, using analytical descriptive statistics techniques based on the methodology of sustainable development indicators for tourist destinations of the World Tourism Organisation. The purpose of this article is to: firstly, describe tourism development and assess its economic, environmental and social impact; and, secondly, to analyse the feasibility of implementing a development model based on nature tourism, on the basis of an analysis of its potential and limitations, taking the Loreto Mágico de Loreto, Lower California South as a study area. The results show that the destination provides better indicators in areas that value quality of life, urban and social development, as well as the economic benefits of tourism; however, the indicators of environmental sustainability and tourism competitiveness show a relative decline in the 2000 and 2015 benchmarking exercise.
