Abstract

José Saramago, in his test on blindness, using a whole set of images, describes how human beings, without being blind, do not see the reality of beautiful, rotting and social inglobalisation we are building. Many are the collective mirrors with which we build and visualise our experiences. They are not made of glass but represent a whole set of abstractions, imaginaries, mediations, institutions, normations and ideologies with which the reality is structured in a relationship and procedurally. Through science, religion, law, the economy, the state, the market, human rights, myths, culture... we establish links and hierarchies between infinitely vast fields of social practices. What mirrors reflect are what societies are. When we are subordinate to them, delegating to them the role and control of our actions, we increase the risk of being trapped in their domains under vertical relationships of discrimination and exclusion. When we make them the ones that depend on each and every one of the people that make up humanity, while maintaining the communicative and intersubjective development of our actions, we open up possibilities to be freed under horizontal relationships of mutual recognition and inclusion.
