Vulnerability and coexistence with HIV/AIDS in people above 50 Years

Abstract

Coexistence with HIV/AIDS after the age of 50 is characterised by vicissitudes that generate mental prejudice and suffering in emotional life, and calls for a continuous effort to maintain treatment. The aim of this study was to analyse the vulnerability and coexistence with HIV/AIDS in people over 50 years of age. 10 people took part in the virus, with 6 men and 4 women, aged between 51 and 72, attended by a reference hospital in the treatment of that condition in the city of João Pessoa-PB, Brazil. The diagnostic time varied from 1 to 14 years. As a tool, a biodemographic and clinical questionnaire was used in addition to an interview. The questionnaire data went through a descriptive analysis, while for the emerging content of the interviews, thematic categorisation was used. From the analysis of participants’ reports, nine categories emerged: contagion, diagnosis, perception of AIDS, AIDS in old age, confrontation, support, prejudice, work and prospects. Vulnerability to HIV/HAIDS has been found to be linked to different types of pre-diagnostic vulnerabilities, especially when considering the issues of gênery and access to material and symbolic goods. Although the current therapy has prolonged the lives of people with HIV + diagnosis and improved sexuality at that stage of life, it can be seen that AIDS continues to be associated with death and prejudice, as well as imposing limitations on the existence of intimate relationships. While, on the one hand, the results signal the urgency of prevention strategies specific to that social category, on the other hand, they demonstrate the ontological dimension of sexuality as a human attribute that is not limited to time and age, but is part of the life course.
