Abstract

In 711, the defeat of King wisigoth Rodrigue during the battle of Guadalete marked the collapse of the Kingdom of Toledo and opened the door of the Iberian Peninsula to the Muslim invasion. In the north, the Cantabrian cordiller serves as a safe haven for a handful of Christians who first maintain a pocket of resistance there before founding the Kingdom of Asturias.
