The myth of Pascal Paoli and Napoleon Bonaparte in Corsica from 1970 to today. From the riacquistu to contemporary research : reflections of the ideological, political and socio-economic evolutions and finalities of a historical reconciliation

Abstract

In Corsica, during the years 1970-1980 the images of Pascal Paoli and Napoleon Bonaparte are opposed and irreconcilable. Paoli represents the Corsican national identity and Napoleon the autocrat betraying Corsica in favor of France. From the 2000s, the Corsican press, imbued with scholarly publications, various studies and political developments, reflects the inflection in favor of a Napoleon whose political model was Paoli. From 2010, we will read that the deep relationship between the two men was real. It will therefore seem legitimate to link the Napoleonic myth to Paoli.Paoli's image also evolves to take into account his political realism, and the nature of his sometimes authoritarian power in the service of the common good, of the nation. His work for a social organization respectful of justice, respect for all, the role granted to each appears more clearly from the Corsican tradition. This evolution of the images of Paoli and Napoleon corresponds to the expectations of the present; it creates a convergence between the two characters, and tends to a reappropriation of the history of Corsica by its inhabitants. Such a reconciliation of a Corsican history too often marked by fractures can be a positive dynamic, whose economic issues seem likely to generate a development of Corsica, by and for the Corsicans, thanks to the work of Paoli and Napoleon's well-known asset. It is this asset of notoriety that must be taken advantage of, both for the widespread recognition of Paoli and for today's and tomorrow Corsica. This work is part of the desire to reconcile Corsica with all its past in order to foster a controlled productive economy.
