`titrebA town in order: the building of a state police in Lyon (1848-1862) `/titreb XIXth century sees city enter political thought. Lyon, considered as rebel, raise, during the whole century, the authorities’s fear concerning apparition of revolts. Since the beginning of the XIXth century, national authorities have created and developped a general organization of police, based on new local powers borned of French Revolution and First Empire (prefects, mayors, superintendants of police). In the first half of XIXth century, the police model established in Lyon isn’t, globally, different from the other french cities. Days of February and June 1848 don’t impose deep changements in general organization of lyonese police. In June 1849, the revolt of the Voraces engage a reform which conduct national authorities to create a state police, and a new administrative entity: ‘‘the lyonese agglomeration’’. The police’s direction is unified, and gived to the Rhône’s prefect, and to a new ‘‘general secretary for police’’. Police-stations are reorganised, their staff increased. A new police corps is created – the ‘‘city’s sergeants’’ – as also new special services, for political and surety police. Lastly, this reform sets up a new urban order, based on subjective perception of city areas. Authorities choose to concentrate police and gendarme strenghts essentially on center and on the edge of the town. Lyon and its agglomeration are also integrate in a national and departemental scheme (distribution of police and gendarmerie strenghts, birth of railways police). The reform of lyonese police contribute to create a particulary situation to a city tought rebel. It reveals moreover a mean of control of urban society in XIXth century France, and thus shows a stage of building of the french police institution.
