Abstract
Report from Cresson Research. Toulouse City Council market ref: ISP/MF: 139/04 of 26 February 2004 This study is the sociological part of an order from the city of Toulouse to highlight two urban areas, the Bordelongue city and the email from the large group of Empalot, both of which belong to social housing districts in the Grand Project de Ville. Its aim is, on the basis of the collection and analysis of site-specific perceptions and night-time uses, to draw up for each site a series of proposals which will support or enrich the lightning project. To this end, it uses a number of in-situ investigation methods: comments, interviews and feedback with residents and representatives or partners of the contracting authority at the end of winter and spring 2004. The resulting sensitive diagnosis is structured around three points: night perception expressed in terms of amount of lighting, functional needs and feeling of security; identification of more precise spatial and visual configurations crossing points of view, routes and effects related to lighting, and description of observed or expressed uses and representations. For each site, the prioritisation of spaces and the night-time support for daily practices are then proposed as an intervention frame for the project. This frame focuses in particular on defining a modulation of the ambient qualities according to the more or less public character of each space. (Author’s summary)
