When Chinese companies become global: Haier, Huawei and TCL

Abstract

China’s companies are today among the leaders of the globalised economy. This is one of the most significant achievements of China’s transformation over the past 30 years. But what are the secrets and deep powers? The author conducts the investigation in three world giants of Chinese origin: Haier in household appliances, Huawei in telecommunications, and TCL in television and multimedia. These companies have succeeded in taking advantage of their European, American and Asian rivals by developing advanced technological and managerial skills Geneviève Barré analyses their strategies: their success depends on strong support from the state, the will and personal commitment of entrepreneurs, significant R & D and innovation efforts, but also an eye, organisation and human resources management policy firmly geared to international best practice. They are the pioneers of a new Chinese path of globalisation: massive state support for innovation and internationalisation is the policy of the global agenda (...) launched by Deng Xiaoping with the reception of foreign investments on Chinese soil and support for Chinese investments abroad. Their strategies are ambitious, flexible and offensive, focusing on human potential, knowledge management and cutting-edge technologies.
