New tourists, new challenges: characterisation of the Argentinian voluntary tourist: Case of study: Global Volunteer, AIESEC, Vitoria, Brazil

Abstract

The general theme of this research is voluntary tourism. The subject is addressed from different axes, such as the motivations of travellers, the expectations and experiences experienced, the organisations managing these journeys or the actors that influence them. This work shows the experiences brought about by voluntary tourism in Argentinian young people who have undertaken at least one of these trips, considering the activity to be a development factor for sending and receiving communities in the face of the growth of voluntary tourism in recent decades. The following work looks at voluntary tourism from the ‘Global Volunteer’ case, managed by the non-governmental youth organisation AIESEC, in January and February 2017 in the city of Vitoria, Brazil. Research has two parts, on the one hand addressing academic literature and sources and, on the other hand, fieldwork. The latter, in turn, consists of, first, a group focus and second semi-structured interviews with Argentinian volunteer tourists, participants in the study case, and, finally, managers of volunteering experiences, members of AIESEC. The work presented below led to an approximation of the characterisation of young Argentinian people practising voluntary tourism and a description of the experiences generated by the activity.
