Education and violence: Environment and possibilities for teachers’ professional and trade union practice in Colombia.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the legal rules governing the protection mechanisms of the Colombian public sector teachers starting the from initial consideration of facts and circumstances that affect their safety, occupation and the guarantee of fundamental rights to life, the free association, academic freedom, among others. Different expressions of violence in the Colombian context have disrupted the performance, tranquility and professional projection of teachers and school; Its results in a valid as an academic exercise to advance the analysis of normative developments from which it is intended to develop a public policy of protecting the public sector educators who face high levels of victimization given the levels of degradation of the violence in Colombia. The research question that guided the investigation and theoretical synthesis process is summarized in two questions: How has violence been a factor that affects teachers and unionist activity of teachers in Colombia? What kind of legal regulation has been developed to address or mitigate the security problems or threats to teachers within the framework of their professional activities and / or trade union? The research was conducted from primary and secondary sources; The necessary information was collected from semi-structured interviews and documentary and text analysis techniques was used.
