Physical Education in High School. Socio-ethno-didactic of PE in academic context of excellence: the case of the Henri-IV high school in Paris

Abstract

What does look like the Physical Education (PE) taught in a high school of chic neighbourhoods? What are the professional actions of PSE teachers? What didactic activity do they spread in the face of the school elite? From a socio-ethno-didactic approach and based on the elements of comparison from the literature dedicated to the “difficult” contexts, the work proposes to reveal the genericities and specificities of the lessons of PE of the Henri-IVhigh school in Paris. The use of concepts, forged by dispositionnaliste and contextualiste sociology, the sociology of curriculum, as well as by the Theory of the didactic Situations and Analysis of joint action in didactics, allowed us to place the discipline in its local and social conditions of production. By multiplying the investigation techniques, from extended immersion on the ground, description of the school context, formal and informal interviews of the PE teachers and of the other actors of the institution, to questionnaires, our work is based on an inductive approach and allowed us to challenge the ethnographical approach. The investigation shows that PE classes take place in a context where the excellence is multifaceted. The standards of this excellence are based, on the one hand, on the capital resources of the pupils, and on the other hand, on specific teaching techniques employed by PSE teachers to the point that PE classes become the place of accumulation of knowledges in the service of the anticipation of the pupils’ future.
