Cinema, Mounding Machine: testing of multiple-world films

Abstract

In this book, the author proposes a theoretical conceptualisation of the co-presence in a single film of multiple worlds by addressing different parameters (heterogeneity of the image bill, alternating editing practices, typology of auctions, screen expansion, etc.) on the basis of a corpus of recent fiction films, most of which belong to the kind of science-fiction (Matrix, Dark City, Avalon, Resident Evil, Avatar, etc.). As a result of filmology, the concept of ‘diegesis’ is developed in the context of both the potential for empowerment shown by the mondaine concept, which seems to dominate today in the age of video games, in its links with the narrative and from an intermediate perspective. The films discussed have the peculiarity of showcasing machines enabling characters to move from one world to another: the ways in which these technologies are configured are being investigated in relation to the imaginations of the cinematographic device and the potential of the assembly. The comparison between films (Tron and its recent Sequel, Totall Recall and its remake) and between film and literary works (in particular the news from Philip K. Dick and Simlacron 3 by Galouye) is an analytical tool for understanding the contemporary nature of this issue, viewed aesthetically in the context of digital imagery.
