Regional nature parks Regional nature parks: Regions with experience

Abstract

National audience Regional Natural Parks (NRPs) celebrate their 50th birthday in 2017. Today, the 51 parking areas cover almost 15 % of French territory and account for more than 8 % of the population. Their birth lies at the crossroads of two stories: protection of the natural environment, spatial planning and decentralisation. From the outset, regional nature parks have had experimentation and education missions. Active precurseursor witnesses, they pass through the various ideologies of this half-century: capitalising on heritage, landscape policy, renewable energies, environmental tourism, support for agriculture, eco-responsibility, participatory approaches, etc. The book takes stock of the network and the successes of the regional infrastructure parks. It puts into perspective their innovations in the context of the crisis in rural areas, against the backdrop of enhancing the natural and cultural heritage and demanding territorial imperatives. It offers a critical reflection on the future of a great degree of flexibility in adapting to the challenges of tackling regional inequalities and increasing metropolisation. This book is a reference for all those concerned by territorial policies, environmental action, post-rural development, all outstanding reforms and transitions (local and regional authorities, energy, biodiversity, etc.). The authors have been supporting the adventure of regional natural parks for twenty years as members of their scientific councils, ad hoc collaborators for a single park and in the Research and Foresight Council of the French PNR Federation.
