The exploitation of irrigation water by crop production in the large irrigated area of Doukkala

Abstract

Water resources in Morocco are potentially limited. The agricultural sector, a large consumer, with 92 % of the water mobilised, is thus called upon to make good use of irrigation water by making better technical, economic and social use of this resource. Our work is part of this policy of promoting irrigation water by crop production, within the Doukkala bas-service area between 90/91 and 99/00. The study covered the main crops irrigated there. The results showed that only 13 % water saving can be achieved by spraying irrigation and that its application needs to be reviewed. Lucerne is the crop that makes the least use of irrigation water with only 1,37 RBDs of VP/S. It is desirable to replace it with other fodder crops such as bersim. Potatoes and tomatoes make good use of irrigation water, which encourages irrigation of these crops, especially in areas where water mobilisation is very expensive. The cultivation of grain maize, which consumes high irrigation water, should be avoided in times of water scarcity. /Water Resources in Morocco are potentially limited. Therefore, the agricultural sector, a high water consumer — up to 92 % — should use irrigation water through a better technical, economic and social development of the water resource. Our work was integrated in the development policy of water irrigation by syrups, in the Perimeter of Doukkala between 1990/91 and 1999/2000. The survey concerned the main irrigated crops. The results shown that sprinkler irrigation only soaps 13 % of water; before its use shoud be reviewed. The alfalfa is the crop that less uses irrigation water with only 1.37 DH of VP/m³. It should be replaced by other Fodder crops such as the bersim. As the candidate and tomato crops use better the irrigation water, they will be developed, still in areas where the water costs are very expensive. As grain maize is a high water requesting crop, its irrigation should be avoided when there is a water shortage.
