Between resistors and acculturation. Ethnic minorities in Prusse-Orientale (1815-1920)

Abstract

The different ethnicities living in Prusse-Orientale have been confronted with progressive germanisation from the beginning of the fifteenth century. While this is initially done in a calm manner and with the agreement of the population, the repressive measures taken by the German authorities after 1865 disrupt the quiet of ethnic relations. While the undeniable successes of this policy have been seen at an early stage, attention should be paid to the reception of these measures by these populations and the resistance they have shown. They are taking an unexpected turn, namely a safe haven for unofficial religious groups on a scale that contradicts the political passivity of ethnicities. The ethnic originality of the province came to an end at the end of the First World War, with the massive rally of people in Germany.
