In search of affiliations In search of affiliations: The Life History Survey on Identity Building

Abstract

Revised in 2003 by INSEE and its partners, the main purpose of the History of Life Survey is the search for affiliations in which social actors are engaged. The book explores individual pathways through different identity registers: territory, family, social affiliation, marriage, occupation, political and religious commitment, languages spoken, disability or illness. Sociologists, demographers, economists, geographers and statisticians here offer their views and differ from traditional classifications, and incorporate a very innovative dimension of the survey comparing the objective conditions of people’s existence in terms of the subjective nature they relate to themselves. This survey is the first in France to identify, by means of figures, the multiple components of individual identity.
