Abstract

In this article we will look at Nerval’s translation of Schiller’s poems. First of all, we will try to extract from the schillerian poetry the images that Schiller lends to the other, in order to show both the meaning they take in the whole of its poetic and the singular resonance they have in Nerval’s thinking, which translates them. The purpose of this initial analysis is to highlight the similarities between the two poets. On this basis, the more detailed examination of the translation proposed by Nerval will, secondly, examine the possible semantic shifts caused by the translation operation. The aim is to show how translation discloses the complex links between two similar and divergent concepts of art. The idea from the other side and its articulation with this, far from being arbitrary, seems to be the very process of translation, but also the Nerval report to poetic writing in general. It is these two points that the third part of this study will try to highlight.
