Abstract

I have recently gone through two new portals in the library sector, which prepare and share library news and topics. Both are professionally reared and provide easy access to beautiful tips. The added value is then paid for. One is called Library Essentials, produced by the Verlag Dinges & Frick, which also produces a bibliothetic journal. Both are issued by Rafael Ball, the director of Regensburger UB. The other is the library knowledge, which is produced by the publisher Dashofr and can easily be seen as an electronic re-use of the ‘successful management of libraries and information facilities’ collection, now three-yearly published by Hobohm/Circuit, of which one is astonished as many library administrations, but it is a relatively high-priced part. The prices of this portal are not lower than high prices. Now, last but not least, practical knowledge is being taught [Disclaimer: I am the author of the loose-leaf collection and thus the portal], the former is rather a digest of news. What I am sad to say is that these services are necessary, especially when these expenses are taken from the library budget. In fact, specialist journals, training courses and free sources of discussion and news, from mailing lists to blogs to aggregators such as plan3t.info, should be sufficient to make themselves known. Instead, free offers are made. For example, in the area of library management, there was a textbook Library Management (also maintained by Professor Hobohm). Going to the address http://www.bibliotheksmanagement.de now requires a lot of effort to find out that an advertiser is driving his glare with a lot of effort. Yes, long speech, short sense: Open sources could also feed their expertise and learn through discussion and sharing...
