Death Square in East Asia Megalopoles

Abstract

Interdisciplinary project involving researchers from three countries (France, Japan and South Korea). The megalopoles in East Asia, boosted by the dynamism of their economies, are constantly fascinating by their gigantism: the Grand Tokyo, with more than 35 million soul. Seoul Capital Region, with 24 million inhabitants, almost half of the national population. In China, there are agglomerations with a population of 10 million. The challenges posed by this gigantism are widely known; however, the size of the city is still little known and little studied: the funeral question. Nobody tells us what is happening in these deca-millionaires. The place of death depends on the funeral practices specific to each country, in each locality. Today’s responses, including the lack of space in megalopoles, bring about significant changes in death habits and rituals.
