Power and politics between Porfiriate and Revolution: The purpose of the reyism

Abstract

is to study the political movement known as ‘reyism’, one of the most important political oppositions in transforming the Mexican public space that prepared the ground for the revolutionary outbreak of 1910. This movement is an internal opposition to Porfirio Díaz’s dictatorial regime and which takes full shape during the regime’s major political crisis: the presidential succession of 1910. The functioning of the Porfirian political universe is starting to be considered in order to explore the conditions for the emergence of a porphyrist opposition. Attention was drawn to the growing divergence between citizens mobilised around a figure, General Bernardo Reyes, who use modern political means (party organisation, public opinion formation, citizen participation) and the general public, whose actions are governed by traditional political vexatisation.
