Paulo Freire: a reading of their critical social and pedagogical thinking from the south

Abstract

The educator Paulo Freire’s thought can be read from different angles and perspectives in each historical moment and socio-cultural reality. However, it is in the camp of the critical tradition of social and educational theory and on the periphery of the dominant system that his thought thrives vigorously. In order to seek to contribute to the reinvigoration of this critical theoretical field today, is that this article seeks to present other possibilities of reading about Paulo Freire’s thought from the South, particularly from the notion of the Anti-imperial South, present in the Post-Abyssal Thought of Boaventura Santos. As a thread of analysis, I ask the following question: when positioning Paulo Freire under this perspective from the South, is it possible to make other readings of his liberating pedagogical thought emerge and contribute to the reinvigoration of his critical theory today? This text is part of a research project, which is underway, which seeks to establish a South-South dialogue between Freire’s thought and Boaventura Santos’ thought, focusing on the themes of democracy and public education in today's Brazilian society.
