Abstract
Taking the notion of ‘Aremenity’ as its starting point, this paper examines the traditional Armenian family structure and how it serves to perpetuate and distribute gender roles within families and Armenian society generally. Considerations taken from psychoanalysis will enable us to pinpoint the mechanisms at work in domestic abuse and the particularly widespread practice in Armenia of the selective abortion of female foetuses.
