Branly-Jacques Chirac Pay Museum 10 years after

Abstract

What was the project of the Branly Pay Museum? How has it been implemented and what developments have occurred? What is its effect on museum designs elsewhere in the world and how has it changed conservation and research practices? This international colloquium looks back on the history of the museum since its opening and above all on the issues it has faced during this period. It will look at the museum’s exhibition policy, the place of research and its link with the museum’s collections, the modalities and challenges of its report to audiences, and the challenges posed by the changing relationship between museum institutions and communities of origin of works. The conference is not intended to take stock of the museum’s actions, let alone serve as a pretext for self-celebration. Rather, it seeks to place the institution in a landscape of art and anthropology museums that has been profoundly renewed for some 15 years. Speakers will seek to identify the role of the Branly Pay Museum as an object of reflection and criticism for the surrounding institutions. Without claiming to be exhaustive, this colloquium will bring together major witnesses of the history and construction of the museum, actors from the different sectors of the museum, researchers and observers from here and beyond, representatives of audiences and communities involved in the museum and its collections. Rather than a series of presentations, the sessions of the symposium will take the form of either round tables or discussions between two or three speakers reacting to questions put by informed moderators and by the public. It will ultimately seek to question and design the figure of the museum of tomorrow.
