Food and Consumption of Substances (Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs) by University Alumnado. Analysis in the role of gender and the practice of physico-sport activity

Abstract

This study aims to know the eating habits and the consumption of harmful substances (alcohol, tobacco and drugs) of university students, and to establish the relationship between these factors and AFD practice and gender. To this end, a descriptive and inferential study was carried out with 1085 students from the University of Seville, to whom a pre-validated questionnaire was applied. The results show appropriate feeding habits of the pupil. Alcohol is the substance consumed by the largest number of students, especially occasionally and at weekends. Tobacco is the substance most commonly consumed, while illegal drugs are scarcely consumed by pupils. In terms of gender, boys drink more alcohol than girls on a regular basis, while girls smoke more than girls. Active and inactive pupils usually consume alcohol in very similar percentages, but active students consume more alcohol occasionally and during the weekend and also at weekends consume tobacco at rates very similar to inactive pupils. In view of the above, it is noted that there is no consistency between AFD’s practice and the positive effects that could be generated in the various health-oriented behaviours.
