These affects, which were linked to her relation with a psychically impaired brother, were re-evoked during the course of treatment. Recurring experiences of murder, rage and destructivity were worked through, leading to the progressive transformation of the repetition compulsion, thanks to a process of self-examination and working-through. Hate thus progressively gave way to a much more tolerable and constructive form of autoerotic rivalry.
