The ‘ibUpanishad’/ib: source of inspiration and release for C.G. Jung

Abstract

C. G. Jung discovered the Upanishads in the early 20th century. These texts sacred to Brahmanism delve into the concepts of brahman (cosmic consciousness) and âtman (individual consciousness). They teach that becoming aware of the oneness of brahman and âtman leads to the ultimate liberation of the soul (moksha). This article shows the means, results, and limitations of Jung’s reading of the Upanishads. At a crucial point in his life, these texts enabled Jung to free himself from Western representations and Freud’s domination.
