Abstract

The task of developing an anthology of critical social thinking in Guatemala has been an effort in several ways. First, to define what is meant by critical thinking, then to decide what period to cover, which authors and authors to include, and which relevant texts. In order to circumscribe the search, it was understood as critical social thinking of all ideas drawn up from different perspectives, in contrast to official speeches and stories, which have been the result of research, analysis, systematisation and reflection on the reality of Guatemalan society, with the aim of disentangling the power structures underpinning an unequal order of colonial roots, which denies rights and limits the human development of the majority of the population, particularly women, and indigenous peoples. The anthology now presented includes 35 authors and authors, women and men, of various identities, and generations. Some with very vast production and others starting their reflections. The aim was to show a polyphony of voices and perspectives, and for the purposes of better understanding, four axes were identified which reflect the main societal, intellectual and political concerns that have prevailed in the late 20th century and early 21: State, political, society and economy (Axis 1); Political violence, social movements, memory and history (Axis 2); Ethnicity, inter-ethnic relations, racism (Axis 3); and finally, corps, gender, feminisms, sexualities, violence (Axis 4). I consider this text to be a further contribution to knowledge of intellectual production in Guatemala, an invitation to deepen critical social thinking, to identify self-styles, issues and problems that have not yet been incorporated. A motivation to continue to investigate and construct the history of intellectual inputs in the country, broadening insights and axes of analysis, seasons and themes. Of Ana Silvia Monzón’s logo
