Abstract

The question of plurilingualism arises for writers well before the 20th century. It could be argued that literature in French has always been defined in relation to other languages: Latin first, but also the various dialects and other European languages that had become literary languages earlier than French. A few milestones in the 12th century, the clerk Benoît de Sainte-Maure justifies his choice to write ancient stories in French in order to bring them together...
