Snipping Space: Montage and Close-Up Techniques in Mina Loy’s New York Poems

Abstract

this article looks at the strategies for the depiction of detail in three poems of Mina Loy, “Ephdissemid”, “On Third Avenue” and “Mass-Production on 14th Street”, which date from the 1940s and relate to the urban experience in New York. On the basis of the idea of cutting down the concept of detail, we examine how Loy cuts and enlarges certain images or uses editing in order to compare the power of modernist art to transfer the surprising peculiarity of the single detail to the growing threat of uniformity due to urban modernity and mass culture.
