Where these data come from
Child victims, child soldiers in the French-speaking African comic strip

Abstract

National audience, according to UNICEF surveys, there are around 300 000 child soldiers worldwide, 10 million killed, 23 million displaced, 30 million injured, victims of adult conflicts. One third of these children would be African. The African comic strip, which since the 2000s has tended to leave the African continent alone, has made conflict-affected children a particular theme. The Rwandan genocide, violence in Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been of interest to African designers such as Pat Masioni, Barly Baruti, TT Fons, but also to European designers deeply inspired by Africa such as Jean-Philippe Stassen. The Communication we propose would like to offer both historical and discursive analysis. On the basis of a corpus of works, we therefore propose to ask us first the question of the origins: since when, where and for what extent does the African comic strip focus on this longstanding phenomenon on this continent? Next, we will look at the content: who produces this kind of comic strip and for whom? What is the speech in these cartoon literature? Finally, we will address the question of how and, subsequently, aesthetic creation. This will inevitably lead us to study the particularities of the medium and the iconotextuel discourse present in the corpus.
