International audience A large part of the Armenian epigraphic sources deals with death and its commemoration. Epitaphs are frequently found on stone crosses which often carry longer texts. They can evoke the circumstances of the death and at times will express the distress of the living. On rare occasions they may even contain a description of the deceased.To the inscriptions found on the two panels of the tombstone-xackar diptych must be added a large number of inscriptions concerning donations. The donor would leave a part of his worldly goods to the monastery in exchange for masses to be said for him or for other members of his family. These inscriptions, of which there are a great number, are often found on the walls of a part of the church called the gawit or the zamatum, an arched hall adjoining the church and which contains many graves.It would be of interest to consider at length the recurring phrases that occur in the various types of inscriptions at a time when we still have very few academic works extant on death in medieval Armenia.
